ECSE

 

Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) classes are provided to preschool aged students 2.6 months and older who have a hearing loss and demonstrate a need for communication through sign language. The program runs Monday Through Thursday for EC 3 and Monday through Friday for EC 4 for the 2011-2012 school year, 8:30 a.m - 3:15 p.m.  The focus of the classroom is language-based through activities developed and provided by the staff : Licensed Teacher, Speech and Language Pathologist, ASL Specialist, Occupational and/or Physical Therapists, Para-Educators and other personnel as determined by needs in the classroom.  All classroom instruction is provided in American Sign Language with bilingual methodologies applied throughout the curriculum.  ECSE students enjoy an active day filled with student-centered and purposeful learning, physical activities, lunch and rest time.  Based on the age of the student, readiness skills are part of the daily instruction on as the child progresses through the program and eventually transitions into all-day Kindergarten.

There is no cost associated with the ECSE program if the student qualifies for service under Minnesota special education requirements.  Parents are encouraged to work through their resident school district for placement at MDS.  Should you have questions regarding potential placement of a student, please contact Dyan Sherwood, at 651-259-1050 (voice), 651-964-1631 (VP) or email.
